Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Production

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is made from a high purity urea solution. Urea is produced synthetically from ammonia and carbon dioxide (CO2). Urea is found in every day US products such as hair conditioner, cosmetics, adhesives. Yara is the largest single urea producer in North America with the 1.1 million tons production capacity at our Yara Belle Plaine plant. In addition, Yara North America imports around 1 million tons of urea to our strategically located coastal terminals to cover regions not covered by domestic US plants.
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) from Air1 is commercialized by Yara, the largest Diesel Exhaust Fluid supplier in the world. In North America, we will have the most developed production and sourcing concept in place to serve the market. Our experience from other markets has shown us that you need a multi-production platform to ensure reliable and consistent deliveries of DEF.

By 2019, DEF consumption in North America is estimated by Integer to reach 1.2 billion tons per year. When market maturity is reached, North America will be the largest Diesel Exhaust Fluid market in the world, followed by Europe and Brazil. In a market that is growing rapidly, Yara offers more than enough capacity to meet the global demand of Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
